About Tarren y Gesail

Tarren y Gesail is a Marilyn of the Cadair Idris group, south of Cadair Idris itself. With its neighbour Tarrenhendre it makes up most of the Tarren subgroup, a run of hills rising from the southern shore of Llyn Mwyngil (Tal-y-llyn Lake) and running out to the Dyfi estuary.

The summit is a grassy ridge carrying a cairn and a trig point. Views reach south and east to Plynlimon and Cardigan Bay, while northwards Cadair Idris dominates, with Maesglase to the west. Between Tarren y Gesail and Tarrenhendre lie the Bryn Eglwys quarry and Nant Gwernol station on the Talyllyn Railway, in the ravine of the Nant Gwernol.

The Tarrens are sometimes called the forgotten mountains of Snowdonia, overshadowed by Cadair Idris on the quiet south-western edge of the national park.

The recorded summit point is no feature. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.
