About Machynlleth station

Machynlleth station is on the Cambrian Line in mid-Wales, serving the town of Machynlleth. It was built by the Newtown and Machynlleth Railway and passed in turn to the Cambrian Railways, the Great Western Railway, and the Western and London Midland Regions of British Railways. The 22 miles (35 km) of line between here and Caersws is the longest distance between two intermediate stations in Wales.

The Corris Railway maintained its own Machynlleth station adjacent to the mainline one, with connecting passenger services until 1931 and slate transfer facilities that lasted until 1948. Today the station is operated by Transport for Wales, with recorded usage of 128,212 in the year from April 2024 to March 2025.

Straight lines are not walking routes

A hill 8 km away in a straight line can be a much longer day on the ground — and on rural lines the last train home leaves early and some stations are request stops with a handful of services a day. Check live times and facilities for Machynlleth before you commit, plan the route on a proper map, and give the daylight planner your real finish time.
