About Graig Goch

Graig Goch is a 586-metre hill in Gwynedd, within Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, straddling the communities of Llanfihangel-y-Pennant and Corris, with the summit lying in the former. It forms a broad-topped ridge aligned north-east to south-west, rising to subsidiary tops on either side of the main summit: Mynydd Cedris and the 504-metre Mynydd Rugog.

Its most striking feature is a large cliff running the full length of the north-western face above Tal-y-llyn, which is in part a major rock-slope failure.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

ground 85m SW at SH 71411 08418 may be as high.

The recorded summit point is no feature: heather. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Graig Goch is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Tarren y Gesail (667 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 456 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
