Slight Side

About Slight Side

Slight Side marks the south-western end of the Scafell Massif, the four-kilometre crescent of high ground containing the highest land in England. The fell itself reaches 762 metres, roughly 25 km east-south-east of Whitehaven.

The name is Old Norse, combining sletta and saetr to give something like the mountain shieling with the level pastures — a shieling being a shepherd's hut or a summer grazing.
