About Pen yr Allt Uchaf

Pen yr Allt Uchaf is a subsidiary summit of Aran Fawddwy in the southern part of Eryri, sitting at the high point of a ridge that branches west from Aran Fawddwy's south ridge.

A small cairn marks the top, which looks down into Cwm Cywarch and across at the steep south faces of Glasgwm, Gwaun y Llwyni and Aran Fawddwy itself. At just over 630 m it is a Hewitt, Nuttall and Simm.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

flat summit area.

The recorded summit point is no feature: grass. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Pen yr Allt Uchaf is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Aran Fawddwy (906 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 570 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
