Great Borne terminates the western end of the long ridge dividing Ennerdale from Buttermere, which leaves it somewhat set apart from the busier fells further east.

At 616 m it clears the 2,000 ft mark, and it appears on an unusually long list of tables — Wainwright, Hewitt, Nuttall, HuMP, Simm, Birkett, Synge and Fellranger.
