Dow Crag

About Dow Crag

The name Dow Crag first belonged not to the fell but to its eastern face, the cliff above Goat's Water near Coniston. Before hillwalking took hold in the 19th century the mass behind it had no need of a name at all; as happened with many fells, the name of the striking feature spread to the whole.

That eastern face remains one of the district's rock-climbing venues. The spelling was originally Doe, and locally the pronunciation still follows the older form.

Dow Crag is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to The Old Man of Coniston (802 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 649 m.
