About Cribyn

Cribyn is one of the more prominent points on the long north-facing escarpment that defines the central Brecon Beacons, running roughly east to west. At 795 metres it stands about 90 metres below its neighbours Pen y Fan and Corn Du.

The summit sits on a ridge running from Talybont Reservoir in the east across to the A470. Westward the ridge links Cribyn with Pen y Fan; eastward it drops to Bwlch ar y Fan, a col carrying an old trail known as the Gap Road, then climbs again to Fan y Big.

Which hill this one belongs to

Cribyn is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Pen y Fan (886 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 666 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
