Craig Cerrig-gleisiad is a cirque cut by a glacier, which left moraine behind and produced a sheltered pocket beneath steep crags. The name means cliff of the salmon-coloured rocks. Because sheep cannot reach the crag ledges, Arctic-alpine plants such as purple saxifrage and roseroot survive there, alongside mixed woodland with orchids and anemones; scattered scrub and hawthorn grow on the lower slopes.

The 629 m summit lies within the Craig Cerrig-gleisiad and Fan Frynych National Nature Reserve, a 156-acre site in Bannau Brycheiniog run by Natural Resources Wales and also taking in Fan Frynych at 629 m. Peregrine falcons, ring ouzels and ravens are among the birds recorded, along with sixteen species of butterfly.

The reserve sits in the Fforest Fawr uplands, ground set aside for hunting in Norman times that stayed in Crown ownership until the early nineteenth century.
