Barrow sits in the Newlands Valley about 4 km south-west of Keswick, a modest fell by Lakeland standards at 455 metres. What it lacks in height it makes up for in outlook: the summit gives an unbroken view in every direction, taking in both the Vale of Keswick and Newlands.

The name is Anglo-Saxon in origin, meaning simply a hill or long ridge — a plain description that suits the fell's shape.
