About Wendover Woods

Haddington Hill, the high point of the Chiltern Hills, lies inside Wendover Woods on the northern edge of the range, and a stone monument on the hill marks the distinction. The summit is unremarkable underfoot; the woodland around it is the reason most people come.

The woods cover 325 hectares of mixed conifer and broad-leaved trees, part of the Public Forest Estate and run by Forestry England. Signed walking routes, bridleways, picnic and barbecue areas and a children's playground share the site, along with a Go Ape treetop course that opened in 2008 and the Aston Hill Mountain Bike Area on the fringe. Ground to the north falls away towards the Aylesbury Vale, which supplies the open view.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

Considerable area of ground in vicinity almost as high. Boulder with plaque 110m NNE, marking highest point of Chilterns, at SP 89071 09086 is 2.7m lower. SE summit at SP 89552 08619 is 2.8m lower.

The recorded summit point is foot of tree just N of road. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

The Wendover Woods group

8 other listed summits sit in the same prominence group, with Wendover Woods as the independent hill at its head.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
