Shalloch on Minnoch belongs to the Range of the Awful Hand, a sub-range of the Galloway Hills within the Southern Uplands. It is often reached from Stinchar Bridge to the north, or taken as one stage of a full traverse of the range.

The name has shifted over time. It appears to have been Bellachgy Hill originally, from the Gaelic Beinn a' Bhealaich Gaoithe, then became Cairnshalloch (Càrn Seilich) after the Shalloch estate, before adopting the English name of the farm itself.
