About Kirriereoch Hill

Kirriereoch Hill belongs to the Range of the Awful Hand, a sub-range of the Galloway Hills in the Southern Uplands. It straddles the old Ayrshire and Kirkcudbrightshire boundary, now Dumfries and Galloway and South Ayrshire, and a boundary wall near the top marks the highest ground in South Ayrshire and in Ayrshire as a whole.

Its listing history is unsettled. Once a Corbett and Marilyn, it was struck from both in 1984 on prominence grounds, then restored as a Marilyn in August 2015 after a survey gave 150.2 m — still short of the 152.4 m a Corbett requires.

The present name comes from Kirriereoch farm to the west, hill in Scots being usable for a hillside grazing. It was recorded in 1654 as 'Meal Tuaichtan', a corruption of the Gaelic Meall an t-Suachdain, a name that survives in Loch Twachtan beside the summit.

The recorded summit point is large smooth rock. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.
