Plover Hill

About Plover Hill

Plover Hill is moorland rather than a distinct cone, lying north of Pen-y-ghent and joined to it by unbroken high ground, so the two are often taken together. It rises between two side valleys of Littondale, with Hesleden Beck to the south and Foxup Beck to the north, and falls within the civil parish of Halton Gill.

The whole area is now open access land, though the principal rights of way arrive from the north off Foxup Road and from the south from Pen-y-ghent's summit.

Plover Hill is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Pen-y-ghent (694 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 621 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
