About Pen-y-ghent

Pen-y-ghent, also spelled Penyghent, is the lowest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks at 694 m, the others being Ingleborough and Whernside. It stands about 3 km east of Horton in Ribblesdale.

The fell is riddled with notable karst features. Hunt Pot lies on its flanks, with Hull Pot lower down, and the water sinking into the hill has cut an extensive cave system that resurges at Brants Gill head. In 2004 the body of Lamduan Armitage, known in press coverage as the Lady of the Hills, was found near the entrance to Sell Gill Hole.

The Pen-y-ghent group

One other listed summit sits in the same prominence group, with Pen-y-ghent as the independent hill at its head.

Plover Hill 680 m 59 m

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
