About Craignaw

Craignaw belongs to the Dungeon Hills, a sub-range of the Galloway Hills in the Southern Uplands, and is unusual for the region in having a genuinely complex, rocky summit area, with a long line of crags and broken ground down the east side. The hill is largely granite.

Towards its northern end lies the Deil's Bowlin' Green, where rounded granite boulders sit scattered across nearly horizontal granite slabs — thought to be glacial erratics or the product of a comparable glacial process.

On the western side, a few hundred metres from the summit, is the crash site of an F-111E Aardvark, marked by a small memorial to the two US Air Force pilots killed, Captains Spaulding and Hetzner.

Finding the summit

The recorded summit point is cairn on top of large boulder. On broad or flat summits the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.
