Black Mixen

About Black Mixen

Black Mixen, or Y Domen Ddu in Welsh, is a subsidiary summit of Great Rhos in the Radnor Forest. The top is an expanse of peat bog plateau, carrying a cairn alongside a radio transmitter and its building — the only Nuttall with a communications mast on its summit.

The cairn is thought to be Bronze Age, in keeping with similar barrows on other peaks nearby. Bache Hill lies east, the Great Rhos plateau west, and the Black Mountains stretch away to the south.

Black Mixen is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Great Rhos (660 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 605 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
