About Bache Hill

Bache Hill, or Bryn Bach, is a subsidiary summit of Rhos Fawr, also called Great Rhos, in the Radnor Forest, and lies east of Black Mixen.

Its trig point stands on an ancient burial mound, probably Bronze Age, like most summit cairns and round barrows in Wales. That has caused some argument over the hill's status, since the 610 m figure may refer to the top of the man-made mound, leading some walkers to doubt whether it truly reaches 2,000 feet. The latest OS Explorer maps show a large 610 m contour encircling the summit.

The recorded summit point is no feature 110m W of tumulus. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Bache Hill is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Great Rhos (660 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 569 m.
