About Whinlatter

Whinlatter is a modest fell in the north-western Lake District, standing just north of the pass that shares its name. The Forestry England plantations clothe much of it, and the Whinlatter Visitor Centre sits on its southern flank.

The fell forms part of a horseshoe of high ground wrapped around the valley of Aiken Beck. Its name is a linguistic hybrid: the Old Norse 'hvin', gorse or furze, joined to the Gaelic 'lettir', slope, giving roughly 'the gorse-covered slope'.
