About Stac Rhos

Stac Rhos is a top of Pen y Boncyn Trefeilw in north-east Wales, part of the Hirnantau section of the Berwyn range. The summit carries a small cairn and a boundary stone.

Views from here are extensive but the surrounding flat, featureless moorland gives them little to work with. Cyrniau Nod lies east and Cefn Gwyntog to the south-east. Stac Rhos is listed as a Nuttall at nearly 630 m.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

SH 96879 27860 is 15cm lower; SH 96861 27889 and SH96886 27954 are lower still.

The recorded summit point is tiny cairn. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Stac Rhos is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Foel Cedig (668 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 604 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
