About Stac Pollaidh

Stac Pollaidh carries a rocky crest of Torridonian sandstone broken into pinnacles and steep gullies. During the last Ice Age the ridge stood above the ice sheet as a nunatak and was left to weathering, while the ice flowing past scoured the mountain's flanks smooth.

The name has shifted over time. Early Ordnance Survey maps give simply An Stac, the pinnacle, and later ones Stac Polly; the Polly element is Norse, from Pollå or pool river, and the modern Gaelic form is a recent coinage.

Standing just over 610 m, with wide views and a road close by, it draws a great many visitors. The traverse of the summit ridge offers scrambling, including one bad step near the final top.
