About Slioch

Slioch stands eight kilometres north of Kinlochewe in Wester Ross, above the southeastern end of Loch Maree. The view of it from the A832 is among the most photographed in the Highlands, and VisitScotland has used footage of the mountain in television advertising.

It is built of Torridonian sandstone resting on a base of Lewisian gneiss, with steep crags on three sides. The open ground of Coire na Sleaghaich to the southeast is the exception, its two flanking ridges giving walkers a way up.

The name comes from the Gaelic sleagh, spear. That reading only makes sense from Lochan Fada to the northeast, where the subsidiary top of Sgurr an Tuill Bhain at 933 metres rises as a slim point. Feral goats are a common sight on the slopes.

The recorded summit point is outcrop 3m S of cairn. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.
