A' Mhaighdean is among the hardest of the northern Munros to reach. It lies 13 kilometres north of Kinlochewe, but the practical approach is from Poolewe, following a private road southeast to Kernsary on foot or by bicycle, then a track to the causeway between the Fionn Loch and the Dubh Loch.

From there the path runs east to around the 300-metre level before the crossing of the Allt Bruthach an Esain gains the northwest ridge. The mountain is gneiss, and its summit is the highest point reached by the Lewisian anywhere. Part of the northwest ridge carries a cap of Torridonian sandstone.
