About Slieve Muck
Slieve Muck takes its name from the Irish Sliabh Muc, 'pig mountain', and stands among the Mourne Mountains in County Down. The River Bann rises on its northern slope.
The hill carries three summits of Silurian shale over an underlying granite core, with the shale forming an escarpment towards their eastern side. West of the tops the ground is grassy, threaded by small streams draining to Deer's Meadow. Below the escarpment on the east, stony scree carries paler patches that from a distance read as the letters POV; locally these have been completed as 'Poverty', giving the hill its alternative name of Poverty Mountain.
