About Shining Tor
Shining Tor is the highest hill in Cheshire, reaching 559 metres in the Peak District between Macclesfield in Cheshire and Buxton in Derbyshire. The summit sits on the administrative boundary between Cheshire East and Derbyshire, at the southern end of a north–south moorland ridge that also takes in the 519-metre Cats Tor.
The name is not unique: another hill called Shining Tor stands above Dovedale in Derbyshire.

mound E of wall at SJ 99475 73744 is of similar height.
The recorded summit point is no feature: 7m NNE of trig point. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

The Shining Tor group
9 other listed summits sit in the same prominence group, with Shining Tor as the independent hill at its head.
| Summit | Height | Drop |
|---|---|---|
| Axe Edge Moor | 551 m | 83 m |
| Whetstone Ridge | 547 m | 40 m |
| Cats Tor | 522 m | 38 m |
| Cheeks Hill (boundary) | 519 m | — |
| Oliver Hill | 513 m | 44 m |
| Black Edge | 507 m | 97 m |
| Shutlingsloe | 506 m | 133 m |
| The Roaches | 505 m | 123 m |
| Combs Head | 503 m | 40 m |
Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
