About Shutlingsloe

Shutlingsloe is a 506-metre hill in Cheshire East, close to the village of Wildboarclough at the edge of the Peak District. It stands south of Macclesfield Forest, inside the National Park boundary, and its steep sides and distinctive profile have earned it the description 'the Matterhorn of Cheshire'. Only two peaks in the historic county of Cheshire are higher, Shining Tor being the highest of all.

The hill commands excellent views over Cheshire, and its summit is crossed by the Peak District Boundary Walk — the highest point reached anywhere on that footpath's 200-mile route.

The name derives from the Old English Scyttel's hlaw, 'Scyttel's hill', built on a personal name. Several other Peak District hills carry names from the same 'low' element, an Old English root that also produced the 'Law' borne by many hills in southern Scotland.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

rock is 10m NNE of trig point and 20cm higher than trig point base.

The recorded summit point is rock with plaque. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Shutlingsloe is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Shining Tor (559 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 373 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
