About Cats Tor
Cats Tor is a Peak District hill on the border between Cheshire and Derbyshire, between the towns of Macclesfield and Buxton. Its name uses 'tor', an Old English word for a high rocky hill, and it stands on The Tors, a gritstone ridge that runs about two kilometres south to the higher peak of Shining Tor and continues north past Windgather Rocks and Taxal Edge towards Whaley Bridge.
On the west side of the ridge, water drains into Todd Brook, which feeds Toddbrook Reservoir, while east of Cats Tor are views of the Goyt Valley, Foxlow Edge and Fernilee Reservoir. The moorland ridge on which the hill lies is designated open-access land for the public under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.

Which hill this one belongs to
Cats Tor is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Shining Tor (559 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 484 m.
Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
