Rosthwaite Fell stands about 12 km due south of Keswick and 2 km south of the village of Rosthwaite in Borrowdale, with loose connections to the Scafell group.

The name comes from Old Norse and translates roughly as the peak above the clearing with a heap of stones, from hreysi for a heap of stones and thveit for a clearing. The 612 m top, Rosthwaite Cam, is a Nuttall, Birkett and Synge.
