About Quinag - Spidean Coinich

Spidean Còinich is one of the peaks strung along the Y-shaped crest of Quinag, a Sutherland mountain range whose undulating summits reach 808 m at their highest. The Gaelic name Cuinneag means a milk pail, a reference to the shape of the massif.

The geology is what sets Quinag apart: Torridonian sandstone sitting on Lewisian gneiss, with the highest peaks capped by a thin layer of Cambrian quartzite. Spidean Còinich's gentle eastern slope is a dip slope following those quartzite beds, and the massif as a whole is a good place to see how these three major rock units of the north-west Highlands relate to one another.

The recorded summit point is rock by crag 4m NNW of small cairn. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.
