About Quinag - Sail Gharbh

Sail Gharbh is the highest point of Quinag, a Sutherland mountain range whose Y-shaped crest carries an undulating series of peaks. The anglicised name comes from the Gaelic Cuinneag, a milk pail, a reference to the shape of the massif.

Quinag is built of Torridonian sandstone sitting on a base of Lewisian gneiss, with the highest tops capped by a thin layer of Cambrian quartzite; the gentle eastern flank of Spidean Còinich is a dip slope following those quartzite beds. The hill is a good place to see how these three major rock units of the north-west Highlands relate to one another.

The recorded summit point is boulder 15m NW of trig point/windshelter. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.
