About Quinag - Sail Ghorm

Sail Ghorm (Sail Gorm) is one of the tops along the Y-shaped crest of Quinag, a Sutherland mountain range whose highest point reaches 808 metres and whose peaks undulate along that ridge. The name Quinag anglicises the Gaelic Cuinneag, a milk pail, a reference to the massif's shape.

Quinag is built of Torridonian sandstone lying on Lewisian gneiss, with a thin cap of Cambrian quartzite on the highest tops — the gentle eastern flank of Spidean Còinich is a dip slope following those quartzite beds. The massif is a good place to see how these three major rock units of the North-West Highlands relate to one another.
