Mungrisdale Common — pronounced mun-GRIZE-dl — has an unusual claim to fame: of the 214 fells in Alfred Wainwright's Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, it was the one he liked least. He wrote that it had no more pretension to elegance than a pudding someone had sat on. Some suspect he included it merely to fill pages, though that has never been established.

The name is a puzzle in itself, since the fell lies several miles from the village of Mungrisdale and in a different river catchment altogether.
