About Mellbreak North Top

Mellbreak North Top is a summit of Mellbreak, a hill in the western part of the English Lake District. Although higher fells surround it on all sides, Mellbreak stands in isolation, ringed on three sides by a 'moat' of deep marshy ground and bounded on the east by Crummock Water. The fell forms a partnership with that lake, running parallel to it and falling sheer into it, and it regularly provides the backdrop for pictures of the water.

Which hill this one belongs to

Mellbreak North Top is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Mellbreak (511 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 446 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
