About Gyrn Ddu
Gyrn Ddu is a hill near the north-eastern corner of the Llŷn Peninsula, in the community of Llanaelhaearn in Gwynedd, North Wales. It forms the western half of a wider upland area, whose other significant top is the 510-metre summit of Bwlch Mawr to the east.
Gyrn Ddu has several outlying tops of its own: Gyrn Goch, its distinct northern top, reaches 492 metres, while an eastern top of 491 metres is crowned by a prehistoric cairn. To the south-west lies the lower top of Moel Pen-llechog at 316 metres, and to the south the flat 416-metre top of Moel Bronmiod.

The Gyrn Ddu group
One other listed summit sits in the same prominence group, with Gyrn Ddu as the independent hill at its head.
| Summit | Height | Drop |
|---|---|---|
| Bwlch Mawr | 510 m | 148 m |
Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
