About Bwlch Mawr

Bwlch Mawr is a hill near the north-eastern corner of the Llŷn Peninsula, in the community of Clynnog in Gwynedd, North Wales. It forms the eastern half of a wider upland area whose highest point is the 522-metre summit of Gyrn Ddu, though it is on Bwlch Mawr that the Ordnance Survey constructed a trig point. Its name is an odd one for a hill, meaning 'big pass' in English.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

rock outcrop 135m SSW at SH 42643 47721 is 0.35m lower.

The recorded summit point is large boulder 12m ESE of trig point. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Bwlch Mawr is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Gyrn Ddu (522 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 363 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
