Dartmoor commons: confirmed right to backpack camp

Following Darwall v Dartmoor National Park Authority [2025] UKSC 20 (21 May 2025), s.10(1) of the Dartmoor Commons Act 1985 confers a public right to pitch tents or otherwise make camp overnight on the Dartmoor commons, as camping is a form of open-air recreation. This applies to the commons (not the whole National Park) — follow the park authority's backpack-camping map and code.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

enormous ancient cairn appears to cover natural summit. Both trig point (SX 63619 91498) and large modern cairn (SX 63663607 91501) sit on the ancient cairn.

The recorded summit point is rock: highest point of ancient cairn 10m N of trig point. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Cosdon Hill is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to High Willhays (622 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 470 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
