About Amicombe Hill
Amicombe Hill, also known as the Devil's Dome, is a hill on northern Dartmoor in Devon, ranked the sixth highest peak in Devon and Dartmoor. Its actual summit is a rock tor beside a flagpole, with Kitty Tor standing nearby. Bleak and remote, the hill lies within Dartmoor's military training area and is closed to the public except at certain times.
The hill takes the form of a long, hooked ridge, with the West Okement River to its east and the Rattle Brook to its west and south-west. Prominent rocky outcrops, including a logan rock, stand on the steep eastern hillside, while to the west lie the remains of Bleak House and other ruins.

Access rights here
Conditional Right to roam: Right to roam only on mapped CRoW open access land.
Yes Wild camping: Lawful on the Dartmoor commons, confirmed by the Supreme Court in 2025.
Following Darwall v Dartmoor National Park Authority [2025] UKSC 20 (21 May 2025), s.10(1) of the Dartmoor Commons Act 1985 confers a public right to pitch tents or otherwise make camp overnight on the Dartmoor commons, as camping is a form of open-air recreation. This applies to the commons (not the whole National Park) — follow the park authority's backpack-camping map and code.
General position for England — local byelaws, seasonal restrictions and closures can override it. Full details: access rights in England ·check another location.

Finding the summit
0.7m higher than ground 210m SSE at SX 56782 87100.
The recorded summit point is rock tor by flagpole. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to
Amicombe Hill is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to High Willhays (622 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 550 m.
Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
