About Hangingstone Hill
Hangingstone Hill is a hill on northern Dartmoor in Devon, and one of the highest points of the moor: it is reckoned the joint third highest peak in Devon and Dartmoor alongside Cut Hill, which lies around four kilometres to the south-west. It is one of Dartmoor's thirteen Deweys, and the tenth highest Dewey in England.
The hill lies within Dartmoor's military training area and is closed to the public except at certain times. A military road runs to the summit, which is marked by an Army observation post and a flagpole; on clear days the view stretches to Exmoor, the Quantocks, the Teign estuary and many of Dartmoor's peaks.
The name comes from a logan rock on the north-western hillside, though the stone no longer rocks; the hill was formerly known as Newtake Hill.

Access rights here
Conditional Right to roam: Right to roam only on mapped CRoW open access land.
Yes Wild camping: Lawful on the Dartmoor commons, confirmed by the Supreme Court in 2025.
Following Darwall v Dartmoor National Park Authority [2025] UKSC 20 (21 May 2025), s.10(1) of the Dartmoor Commons Act 1985 confers a public right to pitch tents or otherwise make camp overnight on the Dartmoor commons, as camping is a form of open-air recreation. This applies to the commons (not the whole National Park) — follow the park authority's backpack-camping map and code.
General position for England — local byelaws, seasonal restrictions and closures can override it. Full details: access rights in England ·check another location.

Finding the summit
cairn on Whitehorse Hill SX 61738 85483 is 1.9m lower.
The recorded summit point is small cairn on mound of grass and stones 10m N of stone hut. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to
Hangingstone Hill is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to High Willhays (622 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 515 m.
Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
