About Coety Mountain
Coety Mountain (also spelled Coity Mountain; Welsh: Mynydd Coety) is a flat-topped mountain rising between Blaenavon and Abertillery in the South Wales Valleys. The highest ground of both the Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent unitary authorities lies at its summit, which is also known as Twyn Ffynhonnau Goerion.
About two kilometres to the south-east is the major subsidiary top of Mynydd Varteg Fawr (549 metres); other notable tops include Mulfran, which overlooks the town of Brynmawr, and Mynydd James, immediately east of Blaina. South-east of Mynydd Varteg Fawr stands a memorial known as the Dog Stone, raised for Carlo the Red Setter, a dog his master shot by accident while hunting in 1864.
Much of the mountain, including the summit, falls within the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape World Heritage Site, and a labyrinth of coal mines, among them Big Pit National Coal Museum, lies beneath it.

Finding the summit
ground 110m SE at SO 23232 07916 is 0.5m lower.
The recorded summit point is no feature: grassy rise. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

The Coety Mountain group
3 other listed summits sit in the same prominence group, with Coety Mountain as the independent hill at its head.
| Summit | Height | Drop |
|---|---|---|
| Cefn Coch | 571 m | 36 m |
| Blorenge | 561 m | 134 m |
| Gwastad | 551 m | 47 m |
Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
