Tom na Gruagaich is the southern of the two Munro summits on Beinn Alligin, one of the well-known Torridon mountains, north of Loch Torridon; the northern top, Sgùrr Mòr, reaches 986 metres. The name Beinn Alligin comes from Gaelic and is usually read as jewelled hill.

Cutting into the ridge south of Sgùrr Mòr is a great cleft, Eag Dhubh na h-Eigheachd, the black gash of the wailing, also called Leum na Caillich. It is the scar of Britain's largest rock avalanche, about 3.5 million cubic metres of debris spilling into the corrie of Toll a' Mhadaidh Mòr some 3,750 years ago. Local tradition held that shepherds heard cries from the gash, and that anyone seeking their source fell to their death.

The mountain lies on the National Trust for Scotland's Torridon Estate, held since 1967, and is covered by both SSSI and Special Area of Conservation designations.
