About Beinn Alligin - Sgurr Mor

Sgurr Mor is the northern and higher of the two Munro summits on Beinn Alligin, the Torridon mountain lying north of Loch Torridon in the Highlands. Its partner, Tom na Gruagaich, stands at 922 metres to the south. The name Beinn Alligin comes from the Gaelic for jewelled hill.

Cutting into the ridge just south of the Sgurr Mor summit is the Eag Dhubh na h-Eigheachd, the black gash of the wailing, also called Leum na Caillich. It is the scar left by the largest rock avalanche known in Britain, roughly 3.5 million cubic metres of debris spilling into the corrie of Toll a' Mhadaidh Mor around 3,750 years ago. Local tradition held that shepherds heard cries from the cleft, and that anyone who went looking for their source fell to their death.

The mountain lies on the National Trust for Scotland's Torridon Estate, in the charity's hands since 1967, and is covered by both SSSI and Special Area of Conservation designations.
