About Rhobell Fawr

Rhobell Fawr sits in the Arenig range within Eryri, and marks the site of a volcano active in the Early Ordovician. Its height is modest by Snowdonian standards, but the surrounding ground is low enough that higher mountains stand out from the top, among them the north face of Cadair Idris and Snowdon further off.

Paths on the hill see little traffic. One clear line does climb from Bwlch Goriwared, a couple of miles north-north-east of the village of Llanfachreth.

The Rhobell Fawr group

One other listed summit sits in the same prominence group, with Rhobell Fawr as the independent hill at its head.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
