About Helvellyn Lower Man

Helvellyn Lower Man is a top on Helvellyn, the highest point of the Helvellyn range — a north-south line of mountains north of Ambleside, running between Thirlmere and Ullswater. Helvellyn is the third-highest summit in England and in the Lake District.

The range's eastern side holds three deep glacial coves and the two narrow ridges of Striding Edge and Swirral Edge. These fells drew walkers early, from the later 18th century onwards; Coleridge and Wordsworth, both living nearby at times, were among the visitors. There have also been many fatalities over two centuries, the best-remembered being the artist Charles Gough, who died on Striding Edge in 1805.
