About Hatterrall Hill
Hatterrall Hill (Welsh: Mynydd Y Gader) is a rounded 531-metre peak in the Black Mountains, sitting astride the border between Monmouthshire in Wales and Herefordshire in England; the Welsh part of the hill lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park. Its summit is the high point of a peaty plateau that falls away steeply on every side.
Broad ridges run from the hill to the north, south-east and south-west. The northern one, known as Hatterrall Ridge, dips to a col at around 485 metres before rising gradually over several kilometres towards Crib y Garth (Black Hill) and Hay Bluff, while the south-west ridge ends abruptly at the sheer cliff of the Darren, below which a considerable landslip area extends south to the hamlet of Cwmyoy with its mis-shapen church.

The recorded summit point is small flat cairn. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to
Hatterrall Hill is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Black Mountain (704 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 486 m.
Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
