About Drygarn Fawr

Drygarn Fawr is one of the highest points in Mid Wales, rising from the remote moorland plateau of the Cambrian Mountains in Powys, south of the Elan Valley Reservoirs and west of the Radnor Forest peaks.

Its form is gentle, grassy and roughly conical, with a scattering of rock near the top, and the summit carries two large and distinctive cairns. Gorllwyn, Y Gamriw and Drum yr Eira, all above 600 m, lie nearby.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

trig point is at SN 86225 58380; note cairn 500m NE at SN 86760 58580 is lower.

The recorded summit point is large cairn 65m NE of trig point. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

The Drygarn Fawr group

One other listed summit sits in the same prominence group, with Drygarn Fawr as the independent hill at its head.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
