Stob Coire Raineach is the northern of the two Munro summits on Buachaille Etive Beag, the roughly 3 km ridge running south-west to north-east between Glen Coe and Glen Etive. Its partner along the crest is Stob Dubh (958 m) at the southern end, with the lower top of Stob nan Cabar beyond to the north.

The ridge sits west of the larger Buachaille Etive Mòr, separated from it by the high pass of the Lairig Gartain. Stob Coire Raineach was only promoted to full Munro status in the 1997 revision of Munro's Tables, when tops with more than 150 metres of prominence were raised to separate mountains.
