About Buachaille Etive Mor - Stob Dearg

Stob Dearg is the north-eastern summit of Buachaille Etive Mor, the 'great herdsman of Etive', and at 1,021.4 metres the highest point on the ridge. Its pyramidal profile from the north-east makes it among the most recognisable mountain shapes in Scotland and one of the most reproduced on postcards and calendars.

The ridge itself is nearly 8 km long, almost wholly encircled by the River Etive and its tributary the River Coupall, and carries four main peaks: Stob Dearg, Stob na Doire at 1,011 m, Stob Coire Altruim at 941 m and Stob na Broige at 956 m. Stob Dearg and Stob na Broige are the two Munros, the latter promoted by the Scottish Mountaineering Club in 1997. Buachaille Etive Beag, a smaller ridge, lies to the west.
