About Black Hill
Black Hill is the highest ground in West Yorkshire and, within the Peak District, is exceeded only by Kinder Scout and Bleaklow. It is Pennine moorland in classic form: a broad, very flat plateau with noticeably steeper flanks.
The top is peaty and drains badly, so it turns boggy after rain. The ground around the summit was once almost bare and very dark, which is where the name fits; restoration work has since covered much of the exposed peat. The Pennine Way crosses the hill, and its paved surface now lets walkers reach the top dry-shod even in wet weather.
