About Black Chew Head

Black Chew Head, in Saddleworth in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, is the county top of Greater Manchester, reaching 542 metres. It stands on moorland at the edge of the Peak District, close to the boundary with Derbyshire's High Peak district.

Like the rest of Saddleworth, the hill was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire; it became a county top only in 1974, when Greater Manchester was created under the Local Government Act 1972.

Finding the summit

Surveyor's note

ground c 20m N is 10cm lower; ground c 40m E over fence is 15cm lower.

The recorded summit point is ground 3m N of small cairn with large post near stile in fence. That distinction matters on broad or flat tops, where the obvious cairn is not always the true high point.

Which hill this one belongs to

Black Chew Head is not counted as an independent hill in its own right. In prominence terms it belongs to Black Hill (581 m) — the nearest Marilyn you can reach from this summit without first dropping below its key col, 509 m.

Grouping is by prominence alone: a summit belongs to the nearest higher Marilyn it connects to without a deeper intervening col. Over a large massif that can gather hills no one would walk in a single day, and which few would describe as parts of the same mountain — it is a measure of independence, not a suggested route.
