About West Lomond
West Lomond is the highest of the Lomond Hills and the county top of Fife. Its cone-shaped summit is the remnant of a volcanic plug, standing above an escarpment of Carboniferous sandstone and limestone capped by a quartz-microgabbro sill. The remains of an Iron Age fort lie on the top.
Along with its neighbour East Lomond it is conspicuous from far off, which lies behind one suggested reading of the name as the beacon hills. Most ascents begin at Craigmead car park on the Falkland-Leslie road, already near 300 metres; another line starts far lower at the Bunnet Stane and climbs the steep north slopes of the escarpment to a gap in the cliffs, joining the plateau close to the summit cone.
